Section 7 of the VCP6-DCV blueprint

Objective 7.1: Troubleshoot vCenter Server, ESXi Hosts, and Virtual Machines
  1. Monitor status of the vCenter Server service

  2. Perform basic maintenance of a vCenter Server database

  3. Monitor status of ESXi management agents

  4. Determine ESXi Host stability issues and gather diagnostics information

  5. Monitor ESXi system health

  6. Locate and analyze vCenter Server and ESXi logs

  7. Determine the appropriate Command Line Interface (CLI) command for a given troubleshooting task

  8. Troubleshoot common issues, including:
    1. vCenter Server service
    2. SSO
    3. vCenter Server connectivity
    4. Virtual machine resource contention, configuration and operation
    5. Platform Services Controller (PSC)
    6. Problems with installation
    7. VMware Tools installation
    8. Fault Tolerant network latency


Objective 7.2: Troubleshoot vSphere Storage and Network Issues
  1. Identify and isolate network and storage resource contention and latency issues

  2. Monitor networking and storage resources using vROps alerts and all badges

  3. Verify network and storage configuration

  4. Verify a given virtual machine is configured with the correct network resources

  5. Monitor/Troubleshoot Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler (SDRS) issues

  6. Recognize the impact of network and storage I/O control configurations

  7. Recognize a connectivity issue caused by a VLAN/PVLAN

  8. Troubleshoot common issues with:
    1. Storage and network
    2. Virtual switch and port group configuration
    3. Physical network adapter configuration
    4. VMFS metadata consistency


Objective 7.3: Troubleshoot vSphere Upgrades
  1. Collect upgrade diagnostic information

  2. Recognize common upgrade issues with vCenter Server and vCenter Server Appliance

  3. Create/Locate/Analyze VMware log bundles

  4. Determine alternative methods to upgrade ESXi Hosts in event of failure

  5. Configure vCenter Server logging options



Objective 7.4: Troubleshoot and Monitor vSphere Performance
  1. Monitor CPU and memory usage (including vRealize OM badges and alerts)

  2. Identify and isolate CPU and memory contention issues

  3. Recognize impact of using CPU/memory limits, reservations and shares

  4. Describe and differentiate critical performance metrics

  5. Describe and differentiate common metrics, including:
    1. Memory
    2. CPU
    3. Network
    4. Storage
  6. Monitor performance through esxtop

  7. Troubleshoot Enhanced vMotion Compatibility (EVC) issues

  8. Troubleshoot virtual machine performance with vRealize Operations

  9. Compare and contrast Overview and Advanced Charts



Objective 7.5: Troubleshoot HA and DRS Configurations and Fault Tolerance
  1. Troubleshoot issues with:
    1. DRS workload balancing
    2. HA failover/redundancy, capacity and network configuration
    3. HA/DRS cluster configuration
    4. vMotion/Storage vMotion configuration and/or migration
    5. Fault Tolerance configuration and failover issues
  2. Explain the DRS Resource Distribution Graph and Target/Current Host Load Deviation

  3. Explain vMotion Resource Maps
